This position is primarily responsible for the plant health care program for the City of Leduc’s urban forest maintenance program and requires seasonal planning and coordination of budget, equipment and staff under the supervision of the Manager and the Lead of the Parks and Open Spaces department. The Arborist is required to attend tree inspections for Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC) and Construction Compliance Certificates (CCC). There is a possibility of playing a role in representing the City of Leduc on community initiatives like Communities in Bloom (CIB), Leduc Environmental Advisory Board (LEAB) or Tree Canada initiatives.

As the successful candidate you will have your ISA Arborist certification or equivalent postsecondary diploma or degree in Forestry or Arboriculture, a valid pesticide license, standard first aid and knowledge of WHMIS, TDG and OH&S. A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in arboriculture is required, municipal tree care operations and supervisory experience is an asset. The successful candidate will have the ability to operate various equipment utilized for parks operations such as an aerial lift truck, brush chipper, back hoe, mower including snow removal equipment for the multi-way system. The ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings and weekends, and a Class 3 license with a Q endorsement is a necessary for this position. The successful candidate must be willing to provide a current criminal record check and driver’s abstract as part of the hiring process.

PRIMARY DUTIES – Sales and Consulting Arborist

  • Prepares estimates and consulting reports for clients and potential customers using laptop and electronic methods
  • Maintains a high level of technical knowledge, attends ISA conventions and workshops
  • Develops and updates Annual Plant Health Care Programs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of trees, insects, and disease and provide recommendations for proper care
  • When required, performs all required ground, climbing, and aerial lift duties in support of specific job assignments, as directed by designated supervisor
  • Responsible for training green hand apprentice arborists, and upholding a high level of safety and customer service standards when completing jobs and interacting with the public
  • Arriving on time to designated sites with the proper gear needed to do the required tasks assigned each day and maintains assigned company gear

The ideal candidates will have 5+ year’s of experience within the Tree Care Industry with above average Tree Identification Knowledge. Valid ISA Certification or degree in Forestry, Arboriculture or a related field is mandatory , though candidates without certification may be considered for other available positions. Must have valid driver’s license , air brakes endorsement not required but beneficial.

Salary: $21.79 to $28.99 per hour depending on qualifications and experience

The City of Brooks’ Parks Services Department has an opening for a permanent full time Parks Maintenance Operator. Reporting to the Parks Services Foreman, you will be responsible for performing the day to day operation and maintenance of all parks, pathways, sports fields, cemeteries and any other related parks amenities under the department’s area of responsibility.

As the successful applicant, you must have completed the twelfth (12th) school grade, or equivalent, and possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with Q-Brake Endorsement with a clean driver’s abstract. Previous parks equipment operation and maintenance experience would be considered an asset. The following certifications would also be considered an asset: Standard First Aid and CPR; WHMIS; Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training; Fall Protection; Tree Insect Management; Tree Pruning Training; Confined Space; CSA Playground certificate; Pesticide Application; and Turf Grass Management Level 2. Irrigation experience would be a major asset for this position.

The City of Brooks offers a competitive salary and benefit package with this position falling within the scope of the Collective Agreement between the City of Brooks and Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1032. The 2017 salary range is $21.79 to $28.99 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. Regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm.
